An assumption is defined as a thing that is accepted as true or as certain to happen, without proof. We make assumptions every day. It is a fact of life. Depending upon the source we can automatically assume that what we are hearing is the truth without any tangible evidence at all. It is amazing to me that we can accept something as the truth and later when evidence is presented, it is found to be false, or only partially correct. I always say that there are three sides to every story, her side, his side and what really happened. And in most cases the third side is God’s side because He is the one who sees perfectly, hears rightly, and will always reveal the truth!
I was in my kitchen about a week ago and walked up to the window to investigate my back yard. Suddenly, I smelled the very poignant aroma of mildew. Mildew has a very recognizable odor. Immediately I assumed that the dry wall in my home had gotten wet somehow in that area and the trapped moisture was causing mildew. My first action was to take a step back and look at the wall surrounding the window. I saw nothing. So, I walked away and made a mental note to call the realty rep in the morning to have someone come out and investigate. As I was walking away, I was impressed to turn around and look down at the right corner at the bottom of the window. And there sat the air purifier. When it is turned on, it releases moist air which is supposed to purify the air, but it was mistakenly pointed toward the curtains. To make a long story short, it was the curtains that had started to mildew and not the dry wall at all. The next day the curtains had completely dried, and the smell was no longer apparent. What I assumed was the source of the problem was not it at all. Instead of making an unnecessary call, all I had to do was move the air purifier to a more open space and wash the curtains!
Assumptions can get us into trouble, especially those about people. We tend to judge the book by its cover often. I remember a lady telling me once that when she first met me, she thought I was mean. I asked her if it was something that I said, and she said that she thought so but couldn’t remember what it was. We both laughed because after she got to know me, she thought otherwise, and I am so glad that she did. My intention is never to come off as being mean spirited or unkind. But someone did give me a tee-shirt that says, “Holy enough to pray for you and hood enough to swing on you!” Now, that made me laugh out loud for a while!
My husband and I are both people watchers. It is not unusual for us to watch people and wonder what they are thinking, by their actions. It is hilarious! And before you chastise me, it is all in fun and something just between the two of us. I love to hear my husband laugh as it is quite contagious. So, with that said if you are ever in Sam’s Club and you hear this unusual laugh that makes you want to laugh, it is probably us standing in front of the rotisserie chicken watching people as they are waiting in line for those birds to hurry up and get done! Humm, wonder what they are saying about us?
